Marvel TV - Punisher (News)

With a big weekend of panels coming at New York Comic Con, Marvel is turning up the heat on the Netflix/Marvel news front. Today the “House of Ideas” announced the casting of three new characters onto The Punisher. Ben Barnes will be playing Billy Russo, the man who becomes Jigsaw. Also joining the cast are Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Micro and Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani.

Dinah Madani appears to be a new character altogether. Marvel describes her as “a highly-trained sophisticated Homeland Security agent who is vexed by the Punisher.” The character could draw on elements of comic characters Kathryn O’Brien or Molly Von Richtofen, both female agents who have worked on bringing in the Punisher. For now, however, the character’s role and back story are anyone’s guess.

The final major piece of information in the release is the 2017 release date. MCUExchange’s Micro scoop had guessed that a 2017 release date was likely, but it is now confirmed. That makes 2017 the first time that three Marvel shows will debut on Netflix in the same calendar year. Such a change is important, given how many shows are now backlogged for production.

Punisher will debut exclusively on Netflix in 2017
