Marvel News

Ran across a couple of articles in regard to Sony was offered all the Marvel Characters back in the 90's. When I read this I was like OMFG...

So I thought it would be a good post for how things could have been compared to how they are now.

Hope you enjoy, here is a excerpt from the article:

If you had $25 million laying around in the '90s, you could've purchased the movie rights to all of Marvel's characters. Sony definitely had that kind of cash to spare, but the company passed. You have to believe they regret it now.

The story comes from Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Fritz, who is set to release a book about the movie industry called The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies. In an excerpt from the book, Fritz reveals that when Sony Pictures tried to secure the movie rights to Spider-Man back in 1998, they could've purchased the rights to all of Marvel's characters for $25 million (or $38 million in today's dollars). About a decade later, Disney bought Marvel for a staggering $4 billion.

Of course, at the time, Marvel wasn't exactly in the shape it is now. Back then, Marvel was struggling and declared bankruptcy in 1996. Action figure company Toy Biz eventually bought the company, but it wasn't until the release of the first X-Men movie in 2000 that Hollywood really started to pay attention to the Marvel universe and its potential on the big screen. After all, previous Marvel movies like Dolph Lundgren's The Punisher didn't exactly set the world on fire.

According to Fritz, Sony was only interested in the rights to Spider-Man. Marvel countered with the rights to all of their characters (or at least the big ones), but a Sony executive reportedly said, "Nobody gives a s*** about any of the other Marvel characters. Go back and do a deal for only Spider-Man." Sony then snagged Spider-Man for $10 million.

Black Panther Opening Night

Marvel's Black Panther opened in U.S. theaters for preview night screenings on Thursday night to an estimated $25 million.
Earlier on Thursday night, analysts were predicting the film would land in the $22 million to $24 million range but is now looking to have surpassed the quarter-century mark. Such a number will make Black Panther the second largest opening of any Marvel Studios film to date, behind only Avengers: Age of Ultron's opening night haul of $27.6 million, and ahead of Captain America: Civil War's $25 million.
Black Panther is flirting with double the Thursday numbers which Deadpool saw in its opening weekend on February 12 of 2016: $12.7. Deadpool would go on to pull in $152.1 million that weekend. It's looking like T'Challa and his Wakandan nation will enjoy more riches, as the film could earn as much as $200 million over the weekend and is expected to land above $180 million.
In its first two days open overseas, Black Panther earned $23.2 million in 17 box office markets. More specifically, Black Panther garnered $4.7 million in Korea, marking the market's second largest opening of any Marvel Studios title. In the United Kingdom, the film has earned $7.2 million, topping Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Wonder Woman, and Deadpool.

'Black Panther' Off to Strong International Box Office Start

The first receipts are in and they are relatively good.  Deadline is reporting the film is number one in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.  The comparisons are a bit difficult to make sense of, given the odd release dates of the film.  Some of the comps are Tuesdays versus Fridays and February is not a traditional blockbuster month (though that is changing).  Black Panther is outperforming Deadpool in the UK, but the X-Men fourth wall breaker was a film with a low international percentage, compared to MCU films.  The King of Wakanda is also doing better than Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man in the Asian territories reporting.
At this point, these numbers don’t mean a whole lot.  It will help to see full weekend numbers for more apples to apples comparisons.  And with all due respect to the good people of Hong Kong and the $500K they dropped on Black Panther, the international picture is far more shaped by some larger markets.  In particular, how will the film do in China?  For a film like Black Panther major success in China could boost the film 10-20% overall with the possibility of a nine figure haul.
Also the wikie for Black Panther is updated with Plot information, I read it and I am pretty excited for the movie which I will be seeing this Saturday. below is the link if your one of those people where reading the Wiki doesn't spoil the movie. So read at your own rise being there are spoilers....

Marvel Studios’ 10th anniversary

Marvel Studios has announced their Marvel Cinematic Universe 10-year anniversary celebration with a class photo and video featuring a ton of talent that worked on the film over these past years. It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since Iron Man was released, and it's incredible to see what Marvel has accomplished in that time. I can't wait to see what the next ten years has in store for us! The celebration is said to last a year and there's going to be all kinds of cool things for the fans.

Marvel Studios’ 10th anniversary begins with the release of “Avengers: Infinity War” and covers an impressive decade of Marvel Studios’ blockbusters released from 2008 through the “Avengers” untitled film in 2019. Mark Ruffalo actually teased this event in a video he posted in October. Below the video, you'll find all the details that were revealed from the press release that was sent out.

Netflix - Jessica Jones Season 2 Poster

Hot on the heels of the Jessica Jones Season 2 trailer release, we now have a new poster featuring everyone’s favorite alcoholic PI!

In the trailer, it appears that Killgrave still has a presence as a sort of devil on Jessica’s shoulder. Meanwhile, as she explores the mysteries surrounding the organization responsible for her abilities, there will most certainly be a new villain. While we do not have confirmation on who this villain will be, rumors are leading us to believe that Typhoid Mary may be appearing. If this turns out to be the case, it would be amazing to see Jessica take on a female antagonist! The two characters could have a lot in common, as they both have a background in abuse and PTSD.

What are your thoughts? Do you think that Typhoid Mary will appear?

DeadPool 2 International Trailer

A fun international trailer has been released for Deadpool 2 and it features a bit of new footage that wasn't included in the first trailer released earlier today. One of those shots shows Deadpool grabbing Colossus' metal ass in the X-mansion.

Also did you catch the Superman JLA references......

Netflix - Jessica Jones Trailer

this day just seems to be getting better and better, not only did we get info on new Venom movie and Deadpool 2 but we also get the first trailer for Jessica Jones Season 2. So give it a watch:

It seems like this next chapter in her story will also dive into the mysterious accident that killed her family and gave her superpowers. She's definitely a little messed up from that and the experiments that were performed on her. We also see some new asshole trying to take over Alias Investigations, and then, of course, there's a violent murder spree across New York. As you might expect, Jessica isn't too keen on this “super vigilante shit.”

Jessica Jones Season 2 certainly looks like it's going to be dark and intense, and I'm looking forward to watching it. There are seventeen years of deep questions that Jessica wants answered and I hope she finds what she is looking for. It's definitly not going to be an easy road for her, though.

Jessica Jones Season 2 is set to hit the small screen on Netflix on March 8th

DeadPool 2 Trailer

It was confirmed at the end of January that principal photography for Sony’s Venom has been completed. With post-production already well underway, all that’s left for Sony is to begin the film’s marketing push, which they officially started today. Tom Hardy just took to Instagram to reveal the film’s teaser poster as well as to announce that a trailer is set to arrive tomorrow. Check it out!

So what are your thoughts on the new movie with Tom Hardy, I am hoping that its going to be a hella lot better then the last time Venom was on screen.
